Apprenticeships are a great way to enter the construction industry with little-to-no previous experience. Better yet, you can earn while you learn! Apprentices are employed within a company. They generally work at least 30 hours per week. The time is split between working for the employer and learning via an approved training provider. With an apprenticeship, you will benefit from real-world experience, while developing the strong foundation of academic construction knowledge to support you as you begin your construction estimator career.
There are various apprenticeship routes you can take on the career path to become a construction estimator including; Construction, Site Management, Engineering and Project Control.
If you are looking for an apprenticeship, trade associations such as Associated Builders and Contractors, offer a variety of apprentice training programs. Apprentice programmes must meet federal and state requirements for wages and training. So, make sure and check that the apprenticeship provider is registered with the United States Department of Labor, Office of Apprenticeship.
Upon successful completion, you will be recognized at the journey level in your trade and awarded your apprenticeship certificate. Many apprentices are also offered a full-time position within the company, making the transition from apprentice to regular employee.
Formal education is not essential for construction estimators. However, it is an advantage. Employers tend to prefer applicants with relevant Bachelors degrees. Many construction estimators begin their careers by studying relevant topics such as Construction Management, Structural Engineering or Architecture.
The Professional Certificate in Construction Estimating is another option. It is an excellent way to learn the principles of construction estimating and bidding in the construction industry and get started in a career as a Construction Estimator. You can finish it in a much shorter timeframe than a degree and there are no formal entry requirements.
Whether you have just completed your apprenticeship, formal education or gained work experience in the construction industry in another position, it is always beneficial to gain on-the-job construction estimating experience to speed up your career progression.
Many Construction Estimators start in other positions within the industry. If you are already working with a construction estimator or have a connection to a Construction Estimator, offer to take on extra responsibilities and assist with their tasks. You’ll learn by watching their process and procedures in practice. You may even receive mentorship and advice in return.
Once you have completed your education or training and gained some work experience in the field, it is time to find a vacancy for a Construction Estimator job.
The entry-level position in Construction Estimating is a Junior Construction Estimator. Starting salaries can be in the range of $50,000 - $80,000. From that position, estimators can progress to a Construction Estimator or branch off into a position as a Commercial Estimator, Electrical Estimator, or Preconstruction Manager.
Senior Construction Estimators/Estimation Managers earn an average of $112,500 per year or over $57 per hour, with experienced Senior Construction Estimators earning more than $155,000 per year and Directors of Estimating earning even more. The top salary can be very high depending on the level of expertise needed and the hiring company.
